The general rule to determine the height you need for a barstool is 12" above seat height.
That means a 36" counter height uses a 24" high stool. A 42" high counter uses a 30" high stool.
A 36" high counter is usually the height of most Kitchen sinks and therefore 24" high is the most widely used height stool.
